a few words about the ihhws

The survey aims to answer key research questions about Hen Harrier population demographics and dynamics, for instance, where do Hen Harrier spend the non-breeding season?

Determining annual and multi annual trends of roost occupancy at local, regional and national levels will enhance our understanding of Hen Harrier winter ecology and allow for accurate on-going assessments of the conservation status of this species in Ireland. This understanding will ultimately inform the conservation and protection of important sites for Hen Harrier.

FOUNDER & SURVEY CO-ORDINATOR

Barry has been studying and enjoying Hen Harriers from childhood. As much as researching the Hen Harrier, Barry derives great satisfaction from the design and implementation of various applied conservation measures to benefit Hen Harrier, other wildlife and rural communities that share the landscape. Barry completed a Masters on the Hen Harrier and a subsequent PhD investigating in detail, various aspects of the species ecology and conservation. In 2004, he founded the Irish Hen Harrier Winter Survey, with hundreds of contributors, providing clear insights into wintering ecology and what was until then a relatively unknown aspect of the bird's ecology.

RYAN WILSON-PARR

Ryan has studied Hen Harriers for over 25 years and completed a Masters Degree on the breeding ecology of Hen Harrier at the University of Glasgow in 2005. Ryan is currently reading for a PhD on the Ecology and Conservation of the Hen Harrier at Atlantic Technological University, Galway. Ryan previously worked as a Project Scientist for the Hen Harrier Programme, a pilot results-based agri-environment project as part of the European Innovation Partnership measure which forms part of Ireland’s Rural Development Programme.
